Operation Efficiency Consultancy
Project description Our team was brought in to help Impact Hub take advantage of their success by implementing operational protocol to boost efficiency and enable them to scale. Engaging in the hub community through strategic conversations, individual interviews and observation highlighted areas of redundancy and opportunities to improve. Our recommendations focused on streamlining communications and practices to create alignment and efficiency. Using strategic models and diagrams we helped the Impact Hub team understand the experiences of their co-working communities. Together we developed repeatable frameworks to enhance the current experience in a manner that was consistent with their values and mission. Representation and Access For Fair Immigration
In the face of the immigration crisis and the rocket docket problem facing the California court system our team came together to develop a solution. RAFFI addresses the needs of two very different groups of people in the United States: immigrants who are detained without being provided legal counsel, and qualified lawyers who are weighed down with crippling debt and struggling in an unbalanced job market. It also provides a benefit to society by saving taxpayer money, keeping families together, and maintaining stability for immigrant employees and employers.
My Role: Market Research, Stakeholder Interviews, Ethnography, Design Strategy, Solution Design
Partners: Andy Greenwood, Adrienne Brown, Julie Grant, Carley Jacobson, Kelsey Kamm
Ethnography - Conducting user research while developing Raffi we spent many days in the court room observing both all aspect of the process. This gave us unique insight into the experiences of the immigrants primarily children under 12, their guardians, the lawyers, the judges and translators.
Interviews - Interviewing the stake holders listed above allowed us to understand the struggles faced by each group.
Brainstorming and Journey Mapping - By comparing experiences in a visual way we found area of overlap that generated our insights that by combing solutions we could provide resolution to each demographic.
There are 34,000 immigrants put into detention every day - 400,000 a year. These immigrants in the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detention system fall into a legal quagmire - since they are not in criminal custody, their civil violation does not afford them a court-appointed attorney. 74% of immigrants in detention do not have lawyers. The average stay is 8 months, but some have been detained for 5 years or more. Keep in mind this includes people are legally entitled to stay in the United States. We spend more on immigration enforcement, including detention, than on all other federal criminal law enforcement combined. One more financial issue to note though - law student loan debt in the US is currently 3.2 billion.

Their is a current surplus of lawyer and new law grads in the US. To time more people passed the bar in 2009 (53,508) than available openings (26,239) for lawyers, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Raffi - Loan forgiveness for lawyer working in the immigration defense. Provides the lawyers experience and moves them towards repaying student loans. Elevate the strain on the judiciary system caused by an overflow of immigration cases. Provides immigrants with access to representation.
